Dr. Venkat Subramaniam, a Great Indian Developer Summit Alumni, is coming back this summer to the summit to conduct focused conference sessions, a keynote and a workshop on topics ranging from .NET, Java, Groovy, functional programming to pointy haired bosses and pragmatic programmers.

On 20th April, at GIDS dot NET Conference, he will delve into what the functional style of programming offers and how you can utilize that using the F# language on the .NET CLR. He will move on to discuss pragmatic ways to deal with dependencies, and how, using mocks, effectively carryout unit tests; the focused session will also cover reasons to use mock vs. not using them, hand tossing mocks, and using frameworks to create them.

At the GIDS Java Conference on 21st April, Venkat will conduct a Jeopardy style presentation, where attendees will drive the topics to discuss various features of Java that require extra care and caution in everyday programming. We will pick a sample code, identify the problems in it, and figure out how to do it right. Later in the day you can attend a session on how to use patterns in Groovy and go beyond the GOF patterns in Groovy and Java. Venkat’s next talk will take a deep dive into Generics, introduced in the 1.5 version (Java 5).

Venkat’s keynote will address the fact that corporate developers have to constantly contend with fallacies often delivered to them as facts. However, each of us has a professional responsibility to be objective and make decisions that will help us and our teams be productive and deliver results. His talk will pick on some fallacies, lay down facts, and discuss how to stay professional and objective in our daily efforts.

On 23rd April, at the full-day GIDS Workshops, Dr. Subramaniam conducts hands-on training about functional programming — take some familiar problems, solve it using traditional style and then refactor it to functional style. Although the training will use Scala and Erlang as vehicle to get the examples working, you don’t have to be familiar with the syntax. You will participate to write pseudo code in these styles and the speaker will help you translate those into practical working examples in these languages.

9th Jan, 2010: Hyderabad’s best-known aerobics instructor, Dinaz Vervatwala, who has been on a record-setting spree of late, is attempting a world record now, in the Polo Grounds at Secunderabad. She is going to perform aerobics exercises non-stop for 26 hours in a row in the public spectacle.

Dinaz is performing with the help of several volunteers, and has an enviable network of friends and ex-students helping her with PR for the event. Ex-student and fan, badminton star Saina Nehwal, led the adulation on stage, calling it a stupendous attempt.

Dinaz has said that she wants people to stay healthy and fit, and wants to raise fitness awareness among people, and that that is one of the reasons for the attempt.

A multi-faceted menu has been created by Executive Chef Sachin Joshi & his team, with inputs from Corporate Chef Ananda Solomon, the master of Thai cuisine in India.

One of the many highlights is the interactive sushi & Teppanyaki kitchen, where the master Chef wields a deft hand. Teppanyaki, extremely popular the world over is an interactive style of cooking where the chef grills the chosen items across the counter & directly flips it onto the plate. The other food options are diverse as they are tempting: after a detailed study of eating habits & likes the menu has been built to include tempura, pan seared scallops, duck liver foie gras, Thai style roast duck, Vietnamese rice-paper rolls, braised turkey breast and of course the traditionally made Thai curries served with jasmine rice; there is enough variety to guarantee many visits! Vegetarian guests are extremely well provided for with ingredients like artichoke, water chestnut, winged beans, silky bean curd, and palm hearts creatively concocted.

The same largess extends to Syn – the island bar. Tibor Duchaj an expatriate barman from Dublin has worked with the local team to concoct a mean set of Syn-specialties: there are Syn inspired martinis, cocktails with champagne, cocktails with fresh-fruit purees, the traditional classics & also a selection of detox cocktails! Community drinking thru super-sized glasses, big enough for ten, termed as ‘Jar-o-syn’ and innovative mock tails, dubbed ‘Sainthood’ add to the fun. A wide but eclectic selection of aperitifs, beer & spirits as well as a super selection of wines ensure that guests will be spoilt for choice. For the connoisseur there are flights of single-malts, vodkas & Shiraz wines.

The ambiance at Syn perfectly combines the high-energy at the bar or interactive kitchen with a laid-back air at the lounge & the bracing feel of the outdoors. Unique lighting & music/ sounds enhance the varied energy forms that Syn takes on – tranquil early evenings to higher tides late at night & back to an ethereal calm. Designer Asmita Marwah has dressed the Syn-ners in dark browns & black keeping at its core the Asian symbolism of warmth, friendliness & loyalty.

Another highlight is the Synfresco, The adjoining Al fresco against a stunning backdrop of a rock garden that provides an elegant and intimate setting for a relaxed evening under the stars.
