Sri Lanka beat India by 29 runs in 1st T20I

Author: John Abraham | Filed under: Events, Featured, News | Featured | Hot Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

After defeat in the Test series, Sri Lanka displayed brilliant all-round performance to beat India by 29 runs in the first Twenty20

Sri Lanka
Indian batsman couldn’t chase the mammoth total of 215 runs posted by the

visiting Sri Lanka and lost all the wickets for 186 runs. After hard-hitting batsman Sehwag got out early, Gautam Gambhir played some brilliant shots and slammed the second quickest half-century in 19 balls.

However, soon after Gambhir fell, no batsman could show patience and got out one after another in quick succession.

Earlier, Kumar Sangakkara cracked a quickfire 37-ball 78 as Sri Lanka took full advantage of a sloppy fielding display to pile up an imposing total of 215/5.

Sangakkara looked in very good touch after scoring a fine century for a lost cause in the second innings of the third and final Test at Mumbai and ensured his team carry on the momentum after a good start given by veteran Sanath Jayasuriya (26) and Tilekaratne Dilshan (34) who put on 43 in six overs.

Later Sangakkara found the ideal partner in the big-hitting Chamara Kapugedara (47 in 20 balls) as the fourth wicket duo added 69 runs in 5.3 overs to help Lanka cross the 200-mark. The visitors set India a tough ask of scoring over 10 runs an over to win the contest.

The Indians paid the price for some shoddy fielding as they dropped as many as five catches while the ground fielding also left much to be desired.

Lanka were off the block in a brisk manner, after being put in to bat by the hosts, once Jayasuriya settled down after playing and missing often earlier.

In one over from Ashish Nehra, the left-handed marauder from Matara, who joined the team at the conclusion of the three-Test series, slammed the left arm pace bowler for five fours when Nehra strayed in line.

Jayasuriya, who initially could not time his shots and was also dropped by Yuvraj Singh at point off Ishant Sharma when on 4 in a total of 14 for none in the fourth over, got his first boundary, a four, in a typical pick-up and loft to the extra cover fence.

He then swung the bowler to the mid wicket region for two fours and then glanced him for two more fours to help himself to 26 in a team score of 39 for no loss after five overs.

India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni replaced Nehra with debutant Ashok Dinda after the left arm bowler’s three overs had cost 34 runs and the fifty came in 40 balls.

The 25-year-old Bengal medium pacer struck off his second ball in international cricket, when Jayasuriya (26 in 20 balls with five fours) slashed and was caught at deep third man by a diving Ishant Sharma, who had previously let off Tilekaratne Dilshan off his own bowling. The batsman was on 13 at his escape.

When spin was introduced at both ends, Lanka skipper Sangakkara carted left arm Pragyan Ojha for two fours and a straight field six off successive balls in his first over to take Lanka past 75 by the ninth over.

Nine RAF battalions rushed in

Author: John Abraham | Filed under: Events, Featured, News | Featured | Hot Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

HYDERABAD: A panicky state government and a clueless administration on Tuesday rushed in nine battalions of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) from New Delhi to meet any challenge in view of the fluid situation in the state – deteriorating health of TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao and the ’shanthi yatra’ programme of TRS and the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the students on December 10 to the assembly.

The Telangana Rashtra Samiti and JAC are trying to mobilise a large number of students and sympathisers of the separate statehood movement from the neighbouring districts. “We are working out various strategies to ensure that our cadres are not stopped on the borders of neighbouring districts. Our rally will be peaceful, we assure you,” said TRS leader Harish Rao, nephew of KCR.

According to sources, the government feels that unless there is enough police force in place on Thursday the agitators could get violent and the situation could go out of hand. The state administration reaction is based on central intelligence inputs about chances of Maoists trying to precipitate matters. But some analysts said the inputs are mere exaggerations.

“They see red elements everywhere,” a local senior cop asserted. The state government has also ordered vacating the hostels of Osmania and Kakatiya University to prevent a safe haven for students participating in the agitations.

From Wednesday onwards, the police would resort to checking of vehicles and nakabandi on the borders of the GHMC limits and also at various places in the city.

IG (vigilance & enforcement) A R Anuradha said: “The police are keeping a close vigil on the movement of outsiders in universities. There is no restriction on the police to enter into university campus and it is not correct to say that police have no right to enter the campus. The police will not remain a silent spectator if anyone tries to violate the law,” she said. She said checks were conducted in Manikeshwar Nagar close to OU campus on Monday on a tip off that some anti-social elements entered the colony and were being provided shelter. In the meantime, a group of students started pelting stones at police forcing them to resort to lathicharge. Eighteen persons were arrested and 23 vehicles damaged in the clash.

KCR refuses medication, condition worsens

Author: John Abraham | Filed under: Events, Featured, News | Featured | Hot Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

HYDERABAD: Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao’s condition is worsening as he is not taking medicines and intravenous fluids, doctors said Wednesday.

As Rao continued his fast-unto-death on the 11th day demanding a separate state of Telangana, doctors monitoring his health at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) here said his condition would deteriorate if he continued the fast.

The Mahabubnagar MP is not cooperating with the doctors and even his blood samples could not be sent to the laboratory Wednesday morning.

Doctors said the protein and fat levels in his blood were coming down as was his weight.

“He is showing signs of protein malnutrition in the form of decreased protein in the blood and he is becoming weaker,” a health bulletin issued by NIMS said.

Doctors said there was an urgent need for insertion of central intravenous line for administration of fluids and medications but KCR, as Rao is popularly known, refused the insertion.

The TRS chief also refused “required intravenous antibiotic, oral and intravenous fluids”.

“He should immediately resume oral feed failing which his general condition would deteriorate further,” the bulletin stated.(IANS)

UPA close to unravelling Telangana tangle

Author: John Abraham | Filed under: Events, Featured, News | Featured | Hot Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

END OF TROUBLE? Sources reveal that the Congress leadership has agreed to the main demand of Rao.

New Delhi: The Core Group of the Congress met in the Capital on Wednesday evening for a second time in the day to discuss the separate Telangana demand of TRS.

The Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh continued to be on the boil as massive protests demanding separate statehood and the fast-unto-death by TRS President K Chandrasekhara Rao entered the 11th day. Doctors said Rao was in a serious condition.

Sources reveal that the Congress leadership has agreed to the main demand of Rao. The Congress has reportedly asked Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah to table a resolution in the Andhra Assembly for a separate state of Telangana.

After the meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Home Minister P Chidambaram told reporters that “I have called Rosaiah for a meeting. We will decide after that.”

The meeting, which was held in Parliament House, was also attended by Congress President Sonia Gandhi and senior ministers A K Antony, Chidambaram, Law Minister Veerappa Moily and Congress leader Ahmed Patel.

From the second meeting of the Core Group, Antony, Chidambaram and Moily drove straight to Gandhi’s residence where Rosaiah was scheduled to meet.

Rosaiah told reporters that the decision on amalgamation or bifurcation has to be taken by the Centre by factoring all issues.

“I am going to meet the Congress President and I will apprise her of the situation in Andhra Pradesh,” he said.

KCR’s son KR Rama Rao said that his father will end his fast only if the Telangana resolution is tabled.

“We are willing to consider it positively. I think I will be able to convince my father on the Assembly resolution. What’s happening in Telangana is a revolution. It’s not a protest that’s happening. The Congress government must make an honest and sincere effort to resolve the issue,” he said.

Meanwhile, 16 Congress MPs belonging to both the Houses of Parliament met the Prime Minister and demanded constitution of a separate Telangana state.
